A NEW movement is being launched in Aberystwyth at a public meeting tomorrow, Friday, as part of a campaign against racism and prejudice.

CYMRU I BAWB is being set up because it is felt there has been a significant increase in the number of hate crimes and racial insults across Britain. Aberystwyth and Ceredigion following the EU membership referendum.

The speakers at the event, starting in the Morlan Centre at 7.30pm, will include Elin Jones AM, Mark Williams MP and AM Joyce Watson. Rev Aled Edwards (Cytûn) and Siôn Meredith (St Mary’s Church) will also contribute to the event.

The intention of the group in the first place is to distribute posters and cards to shops, businesses and individuals in Aberystwyth so that the people of the town can show their opposition to racist comments or acts.

Subsequently a number of events will be organised that can unite those organisations which oppose prejudice in our communities. The initiative has already received the backing of Aberystwyth Town Council.

A spokesperson on behalf of CYMRU I BAWB, Rocet Arwel Jones, said the message that CYMRU I BAWB seeks to spread is that ‘Harmony Not Hate’ is the way forward.

He added: “Here in Aberystwyth and its environs we are lucky to live in an open and welcoming society. But even here we have heard of numerous cases of unacceptable and threatening behaviour over recent months.

"Though it is strange to have to say what seems obvious to most of of us, it is worth stating clearly at times such as these that such behaviour is totally unacceptable.”
