Madam,

As a parent of Beulah school and having had children there for over 10 years, I would like to comment about the review process relating to the four schools initially targeted for closure and the subsequent decision by Ceredigion County Council’s Learning, Overview and Scrutiny Committee on 26 April to move forward with the recommendations to close Beulah and Trewen schools.

I feel it was very bad protocol for the parents and staff of Beulah School to hear about the decision to put the four schools into review last November via the press, rather than through official channels.

The number of students attending Beulah school has not dropped in over 18 months, despite the threat of closure hanging over the school since last November, which shows the closeness and commitment that the parents feel to keeping their local school open.

Also, a point missed in the press coverage to date is that, whereas the Learning, Overview and Scrutiny Committee did vote to begin the formal process to initiate closure of the two schools (Beulah and Trewen), the majority of councillors in attendance chose to abstain.

Thereby, I would challenge the validity of the mandate to close both schools.

Beulah school celebrated its centenary last October and still has a significant number of parents who plan to fight for its future. We have now set up the website www.savebeulahschool.org to profile the school, provide regular updates regarding our campaign to keep Beulah open and to encourage new parents to come and join our traditional rural Welsh medium school.

Yours etc,

Carol Pickover, Caerfryn, Brongest.
