Machynlleth horse riders have backed a UK-wide campaign appealing for motorists to ‘pass wide and slow’ when they see horses on the roads.

Mike Mills has organised a series of rides to raise awareness in recent years, with the latest ride taking place on Sunday, 14 April.

He started organising the rides as part of the national awareness campaign to help protect horses and riders on the roads after his daughter produced a leaflet warning of the dangers to them as part of a school project.

Mike said the latest ride was well supported.

“We covered seven miles in total on the bridleways looking down at Machynlleth town and Forge village,” he said. “Everyone enjoyed the route again.”

Debbie Smith, who started the campaign, said that so far 243 riders have taken part in local rides all over the country.
