Aberystwyth University has cancelled all campus events and moved all lectures online until the summer in response to the coronavirus crisis.

All face-to-face delivery of learning and teaching is suspended from the end of today (Tuesday) at the university, vice-chancellor Prof Elizabeth Treasure told staff and students in a letter today.

Staff and students should not attend any classes for the remainder of this academic year, she said, as teaching moves completely online from Monday, 23 March.

The university said it was 'urgently' looking at options for assessments and exams.

Prof Treasure said that "all events should now be postponed until the end of April" which includes planned Visiting Days for prospective students, but that the campus as a whole will remain open.

"The university is not closing," Prof Treasure said.

"Other activities, including the provision of student support, will continue.

"Hugh Owen library and all food outlets are currently open.

"The Sports Centre is currently open but will decrease numbers in classes to carry out social distancing guidance."

Aberystwyth Arts Centre will close from this evening for the "foreseeable future", Prof Treasure added.

"The decision regarding when to reopen will be kept under ongoing review," she added.

Students will be allowed to travel home as lectures and seminars move online but the halls of residence will remain open along with libraries, study spaces and computing facilities.

"This is a rapidly developing situation and so the university will continue to follow government and Public Health Wales guidance," Prof Treasure said.
