An Aberystwyth canoe club has scooped a top award.
Aber Kayakers have been named club of the year at the Canoe Wales annual meeting in Broneirion.
This is awarded to the top canoe club in Wales, and recognises exemplary achievement in promoting the growth of paddlesport and supporting the development of paddlers at all levels from all communities.
Awarding Aber Kayakers with club of the year, Jen Browning, CEO of Canoe Wales, said: “Aber Kayakers provide a wide range of activities including whitewater kayaking, canoeing, sea kayaking, polo and stand-up paddle-boarding.
“The judges were particularly impressed by how the club embraced the new British Canoeing awards system, and by how they manage to work with other local community groups to offer opportunities to such a wide range of people.”
The award was received on behalf of the club by Joe Sharples and Jason Brook.
Head coach at the club Jason said: “We have a group of dedicated coaches and committee members who have worked hard throughout the year, so it’s great to have that recognised by Canoe Wales.
“A particular highlight for me has been the fact that we have been able to buy a fleet of stand-up paddleboards, with the support of Sport Wales, Ceredigion Community Chest and Aberystwyth Business Club.
“The SUPs have proved really popular and have really helped some of our members develop confidence in their abilities.”
