Can I through the good offices of the Cambrian News suggest a community response following last week’s front page story (‘70 objections to ‘monstrous’ flats plan near harbour’).

I would like to propose an online Ceredigion Carbuncle Cup competition. This takes its inspiration from the magazine Building Design’s annual Carbuncle Cup awarded to“the ugliest building in the UK completed in the last 12 months”.

Scotland has its own Carbuncle Awards. Carbuncle of course comes from a comment made by our very own Prince of Wales in 1984 in response to designs for the National Gallery.

My nomination for 2021 goes to Maes y Môr at Pen yr Angor for its homage to the dominant, brutalist, utilitarian style of Stalinist Russia.

If the latest development at Aberystwyth harbour goes ahead as submitted this will be an early front runner for the 2022 award for its pastiche of the 1970 Spanish Costas style.

The planning officers and councillors at Ceredigion County Council would do well to study the impact of Cesar Manrique and in particular on its planning laws which encouraged tourism development sympathetic to and in keeping with its architectural style with a lack of high-rise building.

To the best of my knowledge there is not a Welsh Carbuncle Cup so I congratulate Ceredigion on setting the bar for the inevitable introduction of one.

Julian Davies, Trefechan, Aberystwyth.
