AN Aberystwyth fund-raiser aiming to raise £2,000 to buy an all-terrain wheelchair for residents at the care home where she works is on course to hit her target.
Leonie Doran, a care manager at Hafan y Waun, launched a year-long fund-raising campaign by taking on a gruelling physical challenge every month.
So far Leonie has completed a Tough Guy obstacle course, a 100-mile run completed over three weeks, and Gung Ho, the world’s biggest obstacle course, but decided to make that even more challenging by completing it in an inflatable dinosaur suit.
By putting herself through her paces, Leonie is hoping to raise enough money to buy a specialist wheelchair which would allow residents of the care home to be able to visit the beach or countryside, visits which are very difficult to do in a normal wheelchair.
While the challenges so far have been tough, Leonie said she had enjoyed them and was looking forward to the future events.
She said: “I’ve done three different types of event so far, which have all been brutal in their own way. Tough Guy involved eight miles of cross country running, followed by 200 frozen, muddy and even electrified obstacles - all based on famous battle scenes from history with ominous names like ‘The Killing Fields’ and ‘The Somme’."
Anyone who would like to donate can do so at http://bit.ly/beachwheels and Leonie has a Facebook page where her progress can be tracked at http://bit.ly/2pfOMfV.
