Madam,

The threat of closure hangs over Bodlondeb residential care home in Penparcau, Aberystwyth, while the BBC reveals research that suggests the UK is 3,000 residential places short of demand and predicts that things are going to worse.

The powers-that-be insist that people want to stay in their own homes rather than go into residential care but, quite frankly, if asked the question baldly who wouldn’t?

There is definitely a role for good-quality home care but, likewise, there has to be a place, too, for the excellent service that places such as Bodlondeb provide to the community.

Isn’t the spectre that hangs over Bodlondeb just further proof that the people who make the decisions and who are meant to serve the community are telling us what we want and using it as a fig leaf to cover the fact they are more concerned about keeping their own jobs than providing decent care for the most vulnerable in our society.

Yours etc,

George Holloway, Rhoshendre, Aberystwyth.
