A CARDIGAN woman who suffers from spina bifida defied her disability to complete a 100km handcycle ride at the town’s Tesco store.

Carys Hope Nicholas raised £1,000 for two charities close to her heart – Mencap Ceredigion and Shine Cymru.

Having recently joined Cardigan’s Slimming World she decided to get fit while at the same time raising much-needed funds for the charities.

“My slimming club advisor encouraged me to exercise despite the fact I was in a wheelchair,” she said.

“We found this handcycle which did the trick and has helped me lose so much more weight.

“As soon as I decided to cycle for charity I contacted Tesco and they were fantastic and agreed to give me a space in the store for my bike ride.

“They were marvellous leading up to the event and during the day.

“The customers were so generous, not only with donations, but with their kind words of encouragement which made the ride that little bit easier."
