A New Quay man has raised more than £20,000 to help the relief effort in Nepal following devastating floods.

On Wednesday, a glacial collapse sparked flash floods downstream on the Trishuli river on the Tibet China border, with the death toll crossing 1,000, according to the country's disaster agency.

New Quay resident, Morgan Phillips, has raised £20,585 and counting for the relief effort in Nepal, with several thousand pounds being donated by Ceredigion residents and former students of Aberaeron school.

Morgan is Executive Director of The Glacier Trust, a small charity that enables climate change adaptation in remote mountain communities.

The money raised will go to The Glacier Trust's partner NGO, EcoHimal in Kathmandu who have travelled to the most affected areas to deliver and distribute essential supplies to people who have lost everything.

The Glacier Trust has raised more than three times their initial target of £4,820 (1 million Nepal rupees) and will use the extra funds to enable villages to 'build back better' making them more resilient and better adapted to climate change.

Morgan, who was also interviewed by Cathy Newman for Times Radio said: “Nepal is suffering the impacts of a crisis it did almost nothing to cause, it is a horrifying and deeply injust disaster.

“The money we are raising will support communities to rebuild in the way they want to rebuild.

“We have over 15 years’ experience of helping remote mountain communities in Nepal to adapt to climate change and we plan to help more with the funds we are raising.
