The Cambrian News has got more than £7,000 to distribute to local charities and groups – the proceeds of the popular 2018 Aberystwyth 10k Race, which was a record-breaker on its 20th anniversary.
Applications are invited for a share of the pot raised by the Cambrian News Aberystwyth 10k Race, held at the beginning of December.
The race, for which the Cambrian News is main sponsor, and which is organised by Aberystwyth Athletics Club and Carl Williams, raises thousands of pounds for local charities each year.
The 2018 race raised £7,143.87, and local charities and other local groups and organisations now have the opportunity to bid for a slice of that money.
Thousands of pounds of sponsorship was also raised by runners, who will be donating their money direct to the charities of their choice.
Last year’s race, which took place on 9 December, was hailed a huge success, with a record 750 runners taking part.
Runners young and old, from all over the country, pounded along the promenade to the finish line near the bandstand.
Anita Worthing of Aberystwyth Athletics Club, who was one of the main organisers of the event, said: “It was the largest turnout ever and there was a long queue of runners hoping to get a place if anyone dropped out. As well as a good showing of local entrants, it is great to see a significant number of entrants from further afield.”
There were a number of sponsors and helpers, whose help and support was vital. Thanks to St John Ambulance for medical cover, MW Scaffolding for providing the finish gantry, Raynet for mobile communications, the Air Cadets for manning the mid-way water station and Tarannau Cheerleaders.
The race couldn’t have taken place without all the marshals; volunteers at the registration base and the baggage drop area who also helped with the post-race refreshments; those who set up the course and cleared up afterwards; and the runners themselves.
