Over 300 people turned out for a charity run this week in memory of a Porthmadog man who took his own life earlier this year.

Gavin Pugh, who was born and raised in Porthmadog, died in August and his family decided to honour their son by holding a run in Gavin’s memory on World Suicide Prevention Day, which was on Tuesday.

Another run was also held in Roath Park in Cardiff, where Gavin lived and worked, at the same time, which was organised by members of CDF Runners and Moti Run Club Roath in Cardiff, of which Gavin was a member.

The Porthmadog run covered 5km around the town and across the Cob.

Both runs were organised to raise awareness and money for mental health charity, Mind. The run in Porthmadog raised £3,000.

Speaking before the run, Gavin’s father, Arwel Pugh, said: “Losing Gavin to this illness has had a devastating effect on our lives, but raising awareness and preventing another death is now our aim.”

Local councillor Nia Jeffreys said: “The run gave us as a town the opportunity to show our love and support for Gavin and his dear family.

“Gavin’s family have shown immense bravery raising awareness of suicide so soon after his life came to an end - and I know the community in Porthmadog will stand shoulder to shoulder with them in their efforts to raise awareness of suicide prevention.”
