RESIDENTS of a north Ceredigion village have said they are “sickened” and “appalled” that someone has vandalised a sign made by children asking motorists to slow down.

The community of Eglwysfach, which is intersected by the busy A487 trunk road, have been fighting for a pavement along the road for more than 30 years, without joy, and three weeks ago made signs asking vehicles to slow down and erected them at opposite ends of the village.

But speaking to the Cambrian News this week, community councillor Alison Swanson said someone has intentionally broken one of the signs, at the Machynlleth end of the village, with what she thinks is an axe.

“I was so angry yesterday — it has had an axe put through it,” said Mrs Swanson. “It hasn’t just happened, it was really solidly put up on top of a bank so nothing could hit it.

“There was another one at the other end of the village and they have worked — they are deterring people from speeding. It really shook me yesterday, it really did."

Asked what the reaction of the village has been to the news the sign was damaged, Mrs Swanson said people were confused and angry in equal measure.
