FOLLOWING weeks of stiff competition, five choirs have wowed the adjudicators and come top of their category, but the time has come to crown the main winner in the final of Côr Cymru 2017.
You can catch all the excitement tomorrow, live on S4C from 6.30pm. As a taster to the main final, S4C will also broadcast the primary school choir final today, Ffeinal Côr Cymru Cynradd 2017.
The choirs going head to head in the main final on Sunday are Côr Ieuenctid Môn from the children’s category; Côr Merched Sir Gâr from the youth category; Côr Meibion Machynlleth from the male voice choirs category, with Ysgol Gerdd Ceredigion representing the female choirs and Côrdydd the mixed choirs.
Although each choir will be singing their own musical programme, this year for the first time, all five choirs will be singing together. The specially composed song has been written by a double Grammy award winner and the winner of the Crown, Chair and Prose competition at the National Eisteddfod.
Christopher Tin from California, one of the adjudicators of the series, wrote the score. He won one of his Grammys for his composition Baba Yetu, the main theme song in the popular video game Civilisation IV. The song Baba Yetu has been sung by many a choir worldwide and is highly respected in choral circles.
Two main prizes are awarded on the night of the grand final – one for the best choir in the eyes of the judges and another for the best conductor, sponsored by Llety Parc Hotel in Aberystwyth. An additional prize is decided through the viewers’ telephone vote.
