Madam,

Adrian Murphy in his letter on the 'clapped out' church of St Winefride’s being ‘past its sell by date’ takes us into the realm of pantomime.

On the one hand we have your goodies, the bishop and trustees, unanimous in their decisions. On the other, the baddies, a caucus of vociferous parishioners who by their ‘unintelligent actions’ frustrate the good bishop.

Trustees should be well informed. But no, Mr Murphy mentions subsidence and roof-ties.

St David’s Cathedral suffered huge problems of subsidence, dealt with in Medieval times. Some famous English cathedrals have similar stories. The problems of St Winifride’s were dealt with long ago. No survey has found structural weakness.

Then Mr Murphy trots out the favourite stalking horse: St Winefride’s had to be closed because insurers refused to provide cover.

The decision to close St Winifride’s was made on 25 September 2012.

This was the day after receipt of the Barratt Report which undermined the diocese’s case for the church. The refusal of the insurers came later.

Yours etc,

Daniel Huws,

Penrhyncoch,
