Madam,

In announcing his intention to rebuild the derelict Catholic church in Penparcau, the Bishop of Menevia states that “at long last we have a way forward which is both realistic and achievable”. He omits to say that there is another way forward to which he has steadfastly refused to give serious consideration: reopen the centrally situated St Winefride’s church, which is much better suited to the needs of Aberystwyth, but which he has been seeking to replace with a property development.

His claims that it is in a dangerous condition have become increasingly difficult to believe, in the face of a mountain of evidence to the contrary.

In October last year, he at last agreed to allow a new independent survey to establish the truth, and even asked the town council to arrange it, then he completely denied having done so.

Transparency and trust are desperately needed, but they have been sadly lacking in this sorry affair.

Yours etc.

Laurie Wright, Dan-y-Coed, Aberystwyth.
