A PORTHMADOG councillor is demanding a crackdown on dog fouling in the town after claiming the problem is “getting worse”.

Cllr Richard Williams said dog fouling is a problem on many streets in the town and even along the coastal path, and has now called on those responsible to clean up after their pets.

Cllr Williams said it is a problem that he believes is getting worse in the town and is urging responsible dog owners to encourage those who aren’t responsible to clean up after their dogs.

He said: “It is a real problem in the Porthmadog area at the moment. Whenever I’m walking around the town I’m finding myself constantly looking down to avoid dog mess which is not right.

“I think if anyone spots someone who doesn’t clean up after their dog they should contact the council and report them immediately. We need to do what we can to sort this problem, it’s up to us to keep our community clean.”

Peter Simpson, Gwynedd Council streetscene manager, said that Porthmadog is regularly patrolled.

He said: “Fixed penalty notices have been issued and further enforcement steps are in progress.

“In Gwynedd it is acceptable to dispose of sealed or tied waste bags in any dog waste bin, any street litter bin or in the owner’s own green wheeled bin.

“Gwynedd Council has already been in touch with Porthmadog Town Council, which has agreed to its proposal to replace a number of town centre litter bins.”

The public can help by reporting those responsible by contacting Gwynedd Council’s Street Enforcement Team confidentially on 01766 771000 or by visiting Gwynedd Council’s Report a Problem webpage.
