Bridge Club

THIS week’s winners of the July round of the Barclays Bank Cup were Mike Jones and John Valentine, with Keith Bellamy and John Evans second and Valerie Wylie and Virginia Willey third.

This week’s Wednesday’s session dealt with three situations when it is essential to delay drawing trumps. These were ruffing (trumping) losers, getting a fast discard of a loser before the opponents can cash their winner, and playing winners then cross-ruffing. The necessity of planning the play and assessing losers before playing to the opening lead was clearly emphasised. The session will be repeated to a different group next Wednesday.

Aberaeron Bridge Club meets in the Royal British Legion Hall each Thursday at 6.40pm – newcomers are eagerly welcomed.

Afternoon tuition for beginners and improvers is at 1pm on Wednesdays in the Feathers Hotel.

For further information on tuition on Wednesdays or playing on Thursdays, phone the club secretary on 01239 811718.

WI

ON Wednesday, 4 July, Aberaeron Women’s Institute held their monthly meeting at the British Legion Hall, where they were joined by group convenor Jill Griffiths.

The members enjoyed a talk, by Liz and Amber from New Quay Birds of Prey, who brought in three different types of Owl, and gave a talk about the feeding and habitat of each of the different types of bird, and gave demonstration of flying the last one. Robin Henson gave the vote of thanks, Sheila Evans won the raffle, and the tea ladies for the evening were Carole Lovel, Jacqui Thomas and Sylvia Williams.

Aeron Valley Railway Society

THE meeting of the society was held on 20 June, and was well-attended by both members and visitors. There was an illustrated talk by David Moores on the South Wales Industrial Line to Blaenserchan Colliery. David’s talk was enlivened by his obvious personal interest and enthusiasm for the area, stemming from his family connections with this part of south Wales. The evening’s event was enjoyed by everyone present.

The next meeting will be held at the usual venue of the Feathers Hotel on 18 July, at 7.30pm, when we will have a return visit by Roger Phelps who will talk to us on the subject of Swiss Railways. They anticipate an entertaining evening and of course all members and interested visitors will be welcome.
