WI

THE October meeting was well attended, as the speaker had been well received on his first visit to the branch.

President Neris Lloyd welcomed everyone, and all the business matters were discussed, with final details of the Christmas meal in December.

She then introduced the speaker, Lt Colonel (retired) Geoff Kingston.

He started as a recruit aged 15 as a French horn player, and went on through many roles in brass band music to become Lt Colonel.

He has composed many pieces of music for army bands, and enjoys passing on his love of music to many local groups in the area.

His talk was entitled ‘Music from World War One’, and he ran through the history of music prior to recording, radio and TV, when all music was live in music halls and in homes and public houses.

Songs were composed for recruiting men into the army to fight for king and country and were sung by music hall singers along with recruiting tables as people left for home.

He played many well-known songs and members were encouraged into singing along with the music, to accompany the recordings, many quite old, but still inspiring and enjoyable to sing.

Linda Hughes thanked Geoff Kingston for such an informative and enjoyable evening, and he judged the competition for a military item.

This was won by Anne Jackson and Jackie Swetman was second.

The raffle was won by Chris Williams.

The next meeting will be the AGM in the British Legion Hall on Wednesday, 2 November.
