Bridge club

ABERAERON Bridge Club participated in the Mid-Wales Bridge Association’s Simultaneous Women’s Pairs (the Flaye Cup) and Men’s Pairs on Thursday, 12 September. This was an event played by clubs over the Mid Wales Bridge area using the same cards as a way of cutting down travel with economic and environmental benefits.

The winners on the night at Aberaeron were Dylan Raw-Rees and Ron Jones, with John Valentine and Mike Jones second, George Kinchington and Mohammed Tahla third and Dawn Claxton and Sally Davies fourth.

In the finalised overall results, John and Mike were 7th, Dylan and Ron were 10th, and Margaret James and Pam Woodhouse were 13th.

The overall winners of the Men’s Pairs were Alan Screen and Alan Stephenson (Newtown) and the overall winners of the Ladies Pairs were Valerie Wylie and Virginia Willey (Cardigan).

Thirty-eight pairs participated, which is a much higher number than would have taken part if the event had been held in a west or east venue on a weekend.

Duplicate bridge sessions for Improvers continues on Wednesday afternoons starting at 1pm.

Last week, they included a number of hands involving transfer bids.

This Wednesday, they plan to play some of the exciting hands from last weeks’ simultaneous.

Aberaeron Bridge Club continues to meet in the Royal British Legion Hall each Thursday at 6.40pm.

WI

PRESIDENT Eleanor Evans welcomed everyone back after the summer break.

Sadly, her first notice was to inform all that Judy Southgate, an active member of the WI, had died, and a minute’s silence was held.

Eleanor then went through all business matters and summer events, giving special thanks to those who helped to make the day at the carnival the success it was.

The guest speaker was Stacey Thomas from the beauty salon Flawless.

She provides all treatments herself, such as luxury pedicures, and treats both ladies and gentlemen of all ages.

Stacey offered someone a manicure, the lucky recipient being Brenda Pritchard who enjoyed having her nails done, saying it was very relaxing.

Stacey was asked to judge the competition, which was a favourite ring. The winner was Eleanor Evans with her grandmother’s wedding ring, and runner-up was Jacqui Thomas with a birthstone ring given to her by her husband.

Vote of thanks to Stacey was given by Sharon Taylor.

The raffle winner was Sylvia Williams.

Tea was then served by Chris Williams and Karolyn Harris.

Next meeting: Wednesday, 2 October, at 7pm in the British Legion Hall.
