WI

A Bright, sunny evening brought 27 members to the British Legion Hall for the September meeting.

President Neris Lloyd welcomed everyone including a visitor, Anne Payne. Neris thanked everyone who had helped and contributed to the success of the carnival stall, where £308 was raised for Women’s Refuges in Ceredigion, this year’s charity for our WI.

The newsletter was studied with the many dates listed, and plans for the Christmas dinner were discussed, with votes for it to be a lunchtime meal instead of the evening.

Neris then introduced the guest speaker Heather Summers, an instrumentalist from Tregroes. She brought a large number of different drums with her – Djemba drums from Ghana and Africa, Arabic drums, Tobana drums from South America, Bongo drums, and wooden crate boxes called Cajons from Spain, originally used by dockers who sat on them while waiting for work.

Everyone had a chance to try them out and managed under her instruction to create real music and diverse linking rhythms that made everyone laugh and also work hard.

Refreshments were served by Sally Davies, Sally Williams and Jacqui Thomas and the vote of thanks for such a fun and enjoyable evening was given by Liz Owens. The competition for a show or concert programme was won by Jacqui Thomas with a Sister Act programme, and the raffle was won by Judy Southgate.

The next meeting is on Wednesday, 4 October with a talk by a police dog handler.

Memorama

CHRISTINE Leonard and Aisling Staite put on three fantastic performances last week in Memorama’s summer production of Deckchairs. Audiences were extremely appreciative of their energy, courage and talent.

Eleanor Gwilym and Arwel Jones will give the talk ‘Ar Hynt i Ohio’ – To Ohio and Beyond. Next year marks the bicentenary of the emigration of a number of families from this area to Ohio in search of a better life. They initially sailed from Aberaeron to Liverpool before joining a larger ship for their great adventure westwards across the Atlantic. Bridge club

THE results for 24 August were: 1, Mike Jones and John Valentine; 2, George Kinchingham and Gwenda Davies; 3, Dylan Raw-Rees and Dai Hayes.

Successful slams were bid by Keith Bellamy and Gill Howells against Herbie Rowley and Nigel Symons Jones, who themselves bid a slam on a later hand.

The most exciting part of the evening was the bid of a grand slam in Hearts by Dylan and Dai, followed by a double of a sacrificial 7 Spades and a final bid of 7 No Trumps going one off after Diamonds failed to split evenly.

The club was one of nine across Wales that took part in the Thursday session of the WBU Autumn Simultaneous event on 7 September.

Top in the club were Dylan Raw-Rees and Dai Hayes, who were 17th nationally, followed by Dawn Claxton and Bob Tilley and, sharing equal third, Chris Dennis and Mair Harrison, and Keith Bellamy and Gill Howells.

Many of the evening’s hands were competitive part-scores, though there was one difficult to bid slam in which two missing aces were compensated by a void in spades.

The Aberaeron club meets on Thursdays at 6.50pm in the Royal British Legion Hall. Newcomers are welcome.
