Bridge Club

WINNERS of this week’s penultimate round of the Barclays Bank Cup were Herbie Rowley and Nigel Symons Jones (10 points), with Valerie Wylie and Virginia Willey equal second with Dai Hayes and Dylan Raw-Rees (9 points each).

Yours truly and his partner came last, undoubtedly due to the night’s very bright full moon!

In the overall standings, Herbie and Nigel with a running total of 59 points have now pushed the previous leaders Keith Bellamy and Gill Howells (55) into third place with Dai and Dylan (57) moving from third to second place.

The final round of the competition will be in the first week of November.

TWENTY-FIVE members gathered in the British Legion Hall for the October meeting.

President Neris Lloyd welcomed everyone, and all the business matters were discussed.

The Christmas lunch has been booked for 13 December, at The Feathers this year, menus will be available later.

Members voted for members whose names they wished to go forward for the election of the next year’s committee at the AGM in November.

The Newsletter was read through with the many dates of events in the run-up to Christmas.

Neris then introduced the guest, PC Hefin Jones, a police dog handler who has been in the police force since about 1998, and a dog handler for 15 years.

He took them through all the aspects of the training of the dogs.

Spaniels are used as sniffer dogs, to search for drugs, firearms and cash, which to the surprise of all takes about six to eight weeks.

General purpose dogs are usually Alsatians, or variations of this breed and their training takes about 13 weeks, as they have to learn obedience, agility, to bark when required, and of course how to bite.

All the dogs are trained with the reward of a tennis ball, which they are given to chew.

Hefin then brought in his two dogs, one at a time, first Oscar a spaniel who bounced in but then lay quietly chewing the ball; then his Alsatian Fern, who played at chewing a tough rubber ball on a rope, but it was very noticeable how she was totally aware of all her surroundings and all of us as well.

They had refreshments, and Hefin chose the Competition winner, for a favourite dog item.

The winner was Gloria Davies, and Anne Williams was second.

The vote of thanks was given by Karen Wright, and the raffle was won by Linda Badham.

The next meeting will be the AGM on Wednesday, 1 November, at the British Legion Hall at 7pm.
