THE latest community news from Aberaeron
WI
THE February meeting was held in the British Legion Hall, and president Neris Lloyd welcomed everyone, including a new member and a visitor.
All the business matters were discussed, including ideas for our trip and charity for this year, and details of our St David’s Day Cawl evening in March. She then introduced the speaker, Ray Williams, a retired vet who lives in Ciliau Aeron, where he was born.
He gave such an interesting and amusing talk on his life, how he had been a keen rugby player and supports the Scarlets team.
After graduating and working in research with cattle, he trained as a vet and spent many years working in a Malmesbury practice, now featured on BBC Countryfile.
After retiring he returned to the farm where he was born and bred, where he is now very active in the community with the Wales Ohio Project to take place this summer.
He told of many amusing incidents and how a vet’s life has changed over the years, but he could still recommend it as a career choice.
The vote of thanks was given by Karen Wright and the competition for an object depicting music was won by Jacqui Thomas with Sharon Taylor second.
The raffle was won by Enid Jenkins and then our usual refreshments were enjoyed to close a very enjoyable evening.

Bridge Club
WINNERS this week were Gill Howells and Keith Bellamy, with an impressive score of 67 per cent.
Dai Hayes and Dylan Raw-Rees were second (55 per cent) and Chris Dennis and Sally Davies third (exactly 50 per cent).
Small slams were bid and made by Chris and Sally, on a hand where a grand slam attempt by John Valentine and Mike Jones was doubled and failed due to a bad trump break.
A different slam was bid and made by Gill and Keith, on a hand where other pairs only made 10 or 11 tricks.
A sacrificial slam bid by John and Mike, based on them having 11 diamonds between them, backfired as a spade game contract by Gill and Keith at the 5-level would have gone down one trick.
The club meets in the Royal British Legion Hall each Thursday at 6.45pm – newcomers are eagerly welcomed. Afternoon tuition for beginners is at 1pm in the Feathers Hotel on Wednesdays.
For further information on attending either on Wednesday or Thursday, phone the club secretary on 01239 811718.
Cymdeithas
CYMDEITHAS Aberaeron’s next talk, the penultimate in this series, will be given by Dr Helen Herbert of the Tanyfron Surgery.
Dr Helen joined her father Dr Hugh Herbert and his partner Dr Geraint Hughes in the practice in 1984 and became head practitioner some four years later after first her father and then Dr Geraint retired.
Dr Helen’s talk, titled Dr Hugh Herbert - His Life and the Best Days of General Practice, will give an insight into the life of a GP from the 50s to the 80s and how general practice has evolved over the years.
All will be revealed in Tabernacl vestry on Tuesday, 20 February at 7.30pm.
