Birthday
ONE of Aberaeron’s best known sons has celebrated his 100th birthday (pictured above).
Eddie Parry’s family owned the Aberaeron Woollen Mill and when he left school he went to college in London to study tailoring with a view to expanding the business into making garments as well as the cloth.
He was always a keen football fan and when in London he became a regular at Chelsea’s home games and still follows them enthusiastically on TV and most other sports too.
When he finished his time in London he came home to join his father and brother Hubert in the family business.
Eddie married Joan and they had two children, Evelyn and Jean, two granddaughters, Rhian and Nia and two great grandchildren, Lydia and Eliott.
As the fortunes of the woollen industry in general went into decline the brothers sold the old mill and each opened shops in the town.
Eddie opened a very popular sweet shop and became known to generations of children as Mr Parry the sweets.
Many of those children beat a path to his door to wish him a happy birthday, the bell didn’t stop ringing with a stream of visitors all day.
Eddie still has a walk most days to the petrol station up the hill for his daily papers.
Bridge Club
THIS week saw the playing of the St David’s Day Simultaneous Pairs which had been postponed due to the freezing weather.
The winners in the club were Dai Hayes and Doreen Anthony, coming 10th nationally, with Herbie Rowley and Nigel Symons-Jones coming second and 31st nationally.
Unusually, there were no slams in the set of boards.
Full reports of results will be posted in April.
Aberaeron Bridge Club meets in the Royal British Legion Hall each Thursday at 6.45pm - newcomers are eagerly welcomed.
Afternoon tuition for beginners is at 1pm in the Feathers Hotel on Wednesdays.
For further information on attending either on Wednesday or Thursday, phone the club secretary on 01239 811718.
School visit
THE National Theatre of Wales and Wales Literature visited the Welsh department of Ysgol Gyfun Aberaeron to hold a creative workshop with Year 9 pupils last week.
It was a fun-filled day and the pupils are looking forward to watching the film that they created next week.
Aeron Valley Railway Society
THE members met at The Feathers Royal Hotel and were entertained by Andrew Charman of the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway.
He gave a superb and well-illustrated talk on the history, the current situation, future plans and investment of the narrow gauge railway.
Many pictures of the Rolling stock as well as the Locos were shown with plenty of humorous anecdotes along the way.
A good time was had by all and Andrew has been invited back for yet another talk next year.
New members welcome, come and enjoy the fun at the Feathers Royal, Aberaeron on the third Wednesday of each month at 7.30pm.
