Cymdeithas yr Aelwyd
Nos Wener, 11 Ionawr, croesawyd Dr James January McCann gan ein cadeirydd Menna Evans.
James yw Swyddog Enwau Lleoedd Comisiwn Brenhinol Henebion Cymru ac felly’n gyfrifol am y cofrestr o enwau lleoedd hanesyddol.
Er fod rhai enwau ’newydd’ twpach na thwp fel Happy Donkey Hill wedi disodli enwau Cymraeg dydy’r bygythiad i enwau hanesyddol ddim yn digwydd ar raddfa eang, a diogelir yr hen enwau ar y rhestr sydd wedi cyrraedd yn agos i 350,000 o enwau. Y cam nesaf fydd ychwanegu cannoedd o filoedd o enwau gasglwyd gan brosiect Cynefin y Llyfrgell Genedlaethol.
Gellir gweld yr enwau hyn ar wefan ddwyieithog Rhestr Enwau Lleoedd Hanesyddol Cymru sydd hefyd yn cynnwys rhestr o’r elfennau sy’n ymddangos mewn enwau lleoedd. Wyddech chi fod bwbach yn ymddangos mewn 11 lle?
Dyma wefan arloesol a gwerthfawr a dymunwn yn dda i James wrth iddo ehangu’r wefan.
Holy Trinity Church
THE church has for many years been supportive of the RNLI, and the life-saving work that it does both nationally and locally in Aberystwyth and the other lifeboat stations in Ceredigion.
Prior to his retirement several years ago, the vicar of Holy Trinity, Rev Ian Girling, was the chaplain to the Aberystwyth branch. Since his retirement Holy Trinity has continued to hold an annual RNLI service, and this year it will take place on Sunday, 27 January at 11am.
Ian has been invited to be the guest preacher at the service, and has accepted the offer. Now living in retirement in Weston Super Mare, he will be making the long journey back to Aberystwyth especially for it, and a warm welcome is extended to all to what should be a very special service. Tea and coffee is always served in church after the 11am service and will give an opportunity for many friends and acquaintances to meet and chat to Ian after the service.
Waunfawr WI
The January meeting of the Waunfawr WI took place on Monday, 7 January in the community hall on the Waun.
There was an excellent turnout of members for the meeting and all were warmly welcomed by the president, Caroline, who was chairing the first meeting of the year and her second as president. The normal business was transacted; and it was good to see members opting to attend the County Willow Workshop in February and compete in the book quiz at Llanrhystud in March. The evening was a busy one for the treasurer as members were paying their subs for the year and receiving their programmes for 2019.
Caroline then welcomed the speaker for the evening, PSCO Michaella Quinn. Michaella spoke about her role in the community emphasising her and her fellow officers’ willingness to be contacted via the 101 number at any time should residents have concerns. She brought a number of helpful leaflets and gave useful advice.
The February meeting of the branch will be on Monday, 4 February, at 7pm in the Waun Hall when members will welcome as speaker Dee Mathews, who will be talking about her career as an airline pilot.
Potential new members and visitors will be welcome.
Before then 18 members will be sitting down to their annual post-Christmas festive lunch on Friday, 26 January, at the Maes Bangor Arms, Capel Bangor.
Aberystwyth Lions Club
In December, Aberystwyth Lions Club held its annual Businesspersons’ Lunch and it was yet again a wonderful event raising £3,500 for their charity fund. The speaker was Sara Edwards, Lord Lieutenant, and she entertained the guests by expressing her gratitude to charity organisations and especially to Aberystwyth Lions Club for all the help it gives to the local community as well as national and international causes. The auction that followed was conducted professionally and with plenty of humour by Iestyn Leyshon. At the club’s Christmas dinner it was with great pride that Lion president Mike Taylor presented two Lions with a Melvin Jones Fellowship award. This is the highest award an individual club can give to a member for dedicated service to the club and its ideals over a sustained period of time. Pictured is Lion president Mike Taylor with the recipients vice-president Marnie Taylor and treasurer Dennis York.
