Radio society
ABERYSTWYTH Amateur Radio Society and members of the Mid Wales Astronomy Club were treated to a very interesting talk by Prof Cathryn Mitchell on space weather and its influence on the earth.
She described the effects that solar flares and sun spots have on our satellite and aircraft communications systems and how road, rail and shipping navigation systems could be affected.
Using recent history, she outlined how solar flares have disrupted national power grids and telecommunications, and which communication frequencies could be shrouded during the next sun spot cycle.
A lively interchange of ideas and experiences closed the evening.

Cambrian Floral Society
TO start the programme for 2020, the January meeting was an informal social afternoon during with a workshop.
Members were asked to bring a container, flowers and foliage of their choice in order to create an arrangement.
Guidance was available during the afternoon and the end result was a colourful display of different designs.
The chairman, John James, gave an assessment of each design at the end of the afternoon.
During the refreshments interval Ros Jehu brought along her collection of photographs which she had taken during the autumn workshop, held by Alex Hales.
Refreshments were prepared by Ann and Sue.
The next meeting is a demonstration on Friday, 21 February, at 2pm in Llanbadarn Church Hall.
The demonstrator will be Margaret Carey who has been busy in the world of flowers for many years and is the present chairperson of Welshpool Floral Society.
All welcome.
North Ceredigion Forum for Elderly Care
THE forum, chaired by former MP Mark Williams, is holding an event at Penparcau Hwb to share details of a bid from a local business person to provide up to 46 nursing beds for EMI (Elderly Mentally Infirm) patients.
This is to be sited in the former residential home at Bodlondeb.
Currently, Ceredigion has seven EMI Nursing beds and this means the overwhelming majority of families and friends face being separated as patients go to homes in other counties.
Forum secretary, Pat Bates said: "All of Ceredigion’s county councillors have been invited and the general public are welcome to come and look at the plans for the project with the aim of increasing awareness for both Councillors and the public of the bid."
The event will take place at the Hub, Penparcau on Monday, 24 February, from 7.30pm to 9pm.
Cymdeithas yr Aelwyd
BRYNHAWN Gwener, 7 Chwefror, croesawyd Gwyn Tudur, Waunfawr, gan ein cadeirydd Menna Evans.
Mae hwn yn llwybr poblogaidd a daeth Gwyn ar draws pobl o nifer o wledydd oedd yn cydgerdded ag ef ac yna’n aros mewn albergues, neu hosteli, sy’n cael eu rhedeg gan wahanol gymdeithasau.
Dogfen hanfodol ar gyfer aros yn y llefydd hyn oedd pasbort y pererin, y credencial, oedd yn cael ei stampio’n gyson ar hyd y daith.
Wrth ddilyn arwydd y gragen(sgalop) aeth Gwyn drwy gefn gwlad, pentrefi bach distaw a dinasoedd fel Pamplona.
A phwy feddyliau y byddai’n gweld siop Laura Ashley yn ninas Burgos! Nos Wener, 14 Chwefror, croesawyd yr heddwas Hefin Jones gan ein cadeirydd Hefin Jones.
Ymunodd Hefin a Heddlu DyfedPowys yn 1998 ac ers 2013 bu’n aelod o’r adran c.n sydd ag 16 aelod, dau ohonynt yn gweithio ym mhorthladdoedd Abergwaun a Doc Penfro.
Y mae Hefin yn trafod dau gi heddlu a disgrifiodd sut y mae’r cwn a’r heddweision yn cael eu hyfforddi i gydweithio a’u gilydd wrth wneud gwaith yr adran cwn.
Ond i’r cwn nid gwaith yw hyn ond chwarae, gyda phel yn wobr am gyflawni tasg!
Y mae gwaith yr adran cwn yn amrywio o chwilio am gyffuriau, arian troseddwyr, drylliau a ffrwydron i chwilio am bobl sydd ar goll neu yn ceisio osgoi cael eu harestio.
Yr elfen olaf a ddysgir i’r cwn yw sut i gnoi, rhag ofn fod angen gwneud hynny mewn un o bedair sefyllfa: rhywun sydd i’w arestio, rhywun sydd ag arf, rhywun sydd a dryll, neu rhywun sy’n ymosod ar heddwas sy’n trafod y ci.
Rotary club
THE guest speaker at last week’s Rotary meeting was Philip Thomas from the Llanbadarn Veterinary Centre.
Philip gave an illustrated talk about the changes which have affected the veterinary industry in Wales since devolution.
He also talked about how the large corporate players now dominate the vet practices in Wales, controlling 70 per cent of the service.
Finally, Philip focussed on the importance of local vet practices engaging in research work.
In this context he and his partners have been working closely with Aberystwyth University to set up a veterinary science school within the university.
It is to be hoped that the appointment of a person to lead the initiative will be announced shortly, and the intention is to admit undergraduate students in September 2021.
Philip was thanked by Rotary Club president David McParlin.
Postcard club
THE postcard club competition took place on 4 February at St David’s Church hall.
The judge was Stuart Evans, who had to assess four categories of postcards, up to three cards being allowed in each.
Two trophies were awarded: The Audrey Baron Jones Memorial Cup was awarded to Janet Preece for obtaining 12 points and coming first and the John Evans Trophy was awarded to Mary Fletcher for gaining five points and coming second.
Before presenting the trophies, Stuart Evans gave a talk to the members and was presented with a bottle of wine, provided by Gwenda Sippings, who also made the certificates.
The next meeting of the club is on 3 March when members from the Criccieth Postcard club will travel to St David’s Church hall and be treated to a buffet lunch, quiz and a ’bring and buy postcards’ from each other’s respective areas.
