Bowls
MEMBERS of the Aberystwyth & District Visually Impaired Club travelled to Bro Ddyfi Leisure Centre, Machynlleth, on Monday, 27 February, to attend the bowls coaching which was again funded by the Ceredigion Association for the Blind.Under the tuition of Genene James and her assistants, Gordan Harries and Peter Williams, the group recapped the fundamentals of delivering the bowls and then the group split up onto different rinks to play as they would in a pairs match.
Due to their sight loss, members required a guide to assist on the day, and without their help the coaching event could not take place. The County Association appreciates the time, support and guidance given by the volunteers.
A follow-up event will be arranged in the near future, so the members can refine their techniques and build on their confidence.

Choral Society
LAST Saturday morning, stalwarts of the Aberystwyth Choral Society, Liz and Gareth Kelly, organised a coffee morning with stalls in the Waunfawr Community Hall. The event was tremendously successful, seeing very good attendance of choristers, patrons and supporters. There was a very good selection of homemade cakes and preserves for sale as well as an excellent bottle stall and good quality bric-a-brac stalls. A total of £545 was raised for the society’s funds.Tickets are now available from the chairman, June Williams, and the Aberystwyth Arts Centre Box Office for the society’s spring concert on Saturday, 22 April, when Sir Michael Tippet’s A Child of Our Time will be the main work performed. This is a very challenging piece for the society, and indeed a disturb-ing reflection of issues relevant in today’s troubled times.

NOS Wener, 3 Mawrth, bu’r aelodau a chyfeillion yn dathlu Gwyl Ddewi yn Llety Parc.Croesawyd pawb gan ein llywydd anrhydeddus, Delyth Fletcher ac wedi inni fwynhau’r wledd ardderchog sy’n nodweddiadol o Llety Parc, cyflwynodd Delyth ein gwraig wadd.Nid siaradwr neu siaradwraig oedd gennym eleni, ond offerynwraig taro o’r radd flaenaf, sef Heledd Gwynant o Gaerffili.Disgybl yn Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni yw Heledd ac yn aelod o Fand Pres Tredegar, enillwyr cystadleuaeth Band Cymru llynedd. Mae hi wedi ennill llu o wobrau unigol ac wedi sicrhau ysgoloriaeth i’r Coleg Cerdd Brenhinol yn Llundain ar gyfer yr hydref nesaf.Daeth Heledd â dau offeren i Llety Parc, sef y seiloffon a’r miramba, a chawsom ein cyfareddu wrth iddi gyflwyno darnau amrywiol, weithiau’n defnyddio pedwar morthwyl yr un pryd. Yr eitem olaf oedd yr helter-skelter a berfformiwyd ganddi ar Noson Lawen yn ddiweddar.Daeth Heledd ymhell ers iddi dechrau ar y tamborin ac edrychwn ymlaen i ddilyn ei gyrfa yn y dyfodol.Un noson, dwy wledd, ac adloniant o’r safon uchaf.
Beekeepers
THE February meeting of the Aberystwyth Beekeepers Association took place on Tuesday, 21 February, at Waunfawr Community Hall with the topic being the Asian Hornet – another invader from the continent which was found in a number of spots in the UK in 2016.There was a good turnout of around 30 members. The meeting began with Karen Smith, the new seasonal bee disease officer for north Ceredigion, being introduced and warmly welcomed to the meeting.Ian Mitchell then gave an excellent and informative talk on the Asian Hornet, dealing with its identifi-cation, how it preys on bees and multiplies, and most importantly, how to trap it. He and a few other members showed different traps which they had made.It all made for a most interesting meeting. With the nights drawing out and the days getting longer, bees are beginning to stir in their hives and prepare for the coming 2017 season.Beekeepers, too, are beginning to think of what they all hope will be a bountiful 2017 season, and one of the problems which every beekeeper invariably faces in the season, is swarming. Thus for the March meeting at the same venue on Tuesday, 21 March, at 7.30pm, the association’s master beekeeper, Lynda Davies, will be giving a topical talk on swarming and swarm management.
All beekeepers are warmly invited to come along and refresh their knowledge on a subject which is always fascinating. Further information on the association and its activities is available from the secretary, Ann Ovens, on 01970 832359.
