Wildlife Trust

The north Ceredigion section of the Wild Life Trust South and West Wales’, programme of monthly evening meetings, resumed on Monday evening, 5 February in Lecture Theatre C22 in the Hugh Owen Building on the Penglais Campus, and on a cold windy wintry night, the attendance was somewhat down on usual.

Chairman Fiona Corke warmly welcomed people to the meeting and before going on to introduce the speaker gave an update on the great work which on two days each week – whatever the weather – Em Foot, the Trust’s Ceredigion wildlife officer, and her dedicated team of volunteers are doing managing the Trust’s Ceredigion nature reserves.

Over the past few months much effort has been devoted to controlling incursions of scrub and trees in wetland and meadow habitats.

She then introduced the speaker, local naturalist David Kirby of Aberystwyth.

David was well known to many of those present, having for many years being a stalwart of the Parc Penglais Local Nature Reserve.

David’s big interest though is ‘Things that Slither and Crawl: Local reptiles’, and he gave a detailed and informative talk on the local reptiles to be found in Ceredigion and their habitat requirements and habitat biology.

The next meeting of the section will be on Monday, 5 March, at 7pm in C22 when Tony Cross (a very keen member of the Mid-Wales Bird Ringing Group) will talk about one of the scarcer, but much loved local birds, the chough. His talk will be on the wider topic of choughs in Wales.

All are welcome. More information is available on the section’s activities from the secretary, David Purdon, on 01970 871012.

Penglais posters

Henry Lewis (Year 9), Charlie Driver (Year 10) and Will Thomas (Year 12) from Ysgol Penglais school have presented posters that they had produced to promote the Careers Wales Careers Fayre – Choose Your Future – Ceredigion Careers Festival to be held on 27 February .

This is a high profile annual event that seeks to showcase the various options available to students post 16. Business Class, who organise the event as part of Careers Wales, ran this poster competition.

A panel of four experts came to interview the boys in a ‘Dragon’s Den’ type session.

All were excellent but one stood out and that was Henry’s.

All three posters will be used to promote the event on social media.

The festival is much anticipated as it is an excellent opportunity for pupils to find out more about the options available to them upon leaving school.

U3A

ON 18 January in the Morlan an appreciative audience enjoyed the U3A talk given by the guest speaker, Mike Lewis.

He entertained members with his talk and pictures of ‘The Lone Welshman at Custer’s Last Stand’.
