THE latest community news from Bala
WI
ON Thursday, 13 July, Bala WI ventured on their annual trip.
It started out at 1pm from the Green car park - a minibus and two cars - 24 people in all.
They made their way to Trevor where, at 2pm, they boarded one of the narrow boats on the canal leading to the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct.
Certain points of interest were pointed out, one being Trevor Hall, an impressive red brick building, built in 1742, saved by a preservation order in 1961, damaged by fire in 1963, and eventually purchased and restored by Michael Tree (a chartered surveyor).
It is now a Country Hotel.
The Bryn Hywel hotel was also pointed out as a popular venue for celebrities and film stars.
As they sailed along, they became aware of walkers and cyclists passing along the towpath and ducklings desperately swimming to escape the narrow boat.
There was some trepidation crossing the aqueduct (built by Thomas Telford) since its length was 1,007ft, height 124.67ft with room for one boat at a time.
Onwards to Moreton Gardens where they spent a pleasant two hours shopping and enjoying a cuppa.
The last lap of the journey was back to Llangollen and the Horseshoe Pass where we enjoyed a satisfying supper in Brittania Inn.
The usual vote of thanks was given by the president to all involved in organising the trip, especially Ann Buffton (treasurer) and Arwel Llanuwchllyn, the driver.
Next meeting will be in September.
