Choirs

IT IS six years since the Rhiannedd y Moelwyn ladies choir formed and they have performed several concerts and in numerous competitions, winning an event in the North Wales Choral Festival.

Since its formation the choir has been conducted by Sylvia Ann Jones, who has also been conducting the Moelwyn Male Voice Choir since 1981, and they were in concert at Betws y Coed on Friday evening with Wenna Francis Jones the accompanist and Gareth Griffiths, the compere.

Bro Ffestiniog

THE English section of Cymdeithas Bro Ffestiniog’s final lecture of the season will be held at the Community Centre at 7.30pm next Tuesday evening where the guest speaker Steffan ab Owain will give a talk on Blaenau Ffestiniog 100 years ago.

Prior to this their AGM will take place at 7pm.

Heritage

THERE has been a significant step towards the slate producing areas, including this area, in gaining UNESCO World Heritage Site Status as the UK Government has announced that the bid they preferred for nomination which will be presented to UNESCO for consideration is the slate mining areas.

Angling

THE NEW angling season has begun and already some keen senior anglers have been catching trout at Ffridd Lake.

A Cambrian Angling Association spokesman has stated that their annual competitions begins in May. For anyone interested in angling the local licence fees are seniors £40, juniors £15 and concessions £30. There are licences also available for visiting anglers on a season, weekly or a day permit priced at £60, £34 and £16 for the seniors and £31, £18 and £7 for the juniors

Clwb Merched

Notice

THE town council has passed the notice of motion from Cllr Anwen Daniels which reads as: “I propose that the town council needs to send a letter to Jill Evans MEP in her position as chair of CND stating that we are opposed to nuclear waste being buried anywhere in the Ffestiniog area.”

Camera club

LINDA Bell from Mold was the judge for the camera club’s last competition of the season, the annual cups, with Tom Dodd winning the Best Print and Rory Trappe second and Peter Jepson third.

The winner of the Projected Image Cup was Peter Jepson, who was also second, with Rory Trappe third.

Memories was the title of Christine Langford’s presentation to the club where members were shown images of early days in photography to her present print work and Tom Dodd gave a vote of thanks for a very enjoyable evening.

Bowling club

THE Blaenau Ffestiniog Bowling Club held its annual meeting last week where the following officials were elected: chairman – David Ll Williams; vice chair – David W Hughes; secretary – Dewi Moelwyn Williams; treasurer – Martin W Hughes; club captain – Mike Burgoyne; committee members – Richard Elwyn Jones, Elwyn V Jones, Gwyn M Jones, B J Hughes, Iwan V Jones and Geraint Williams.

The club plays in the Section A of the North Wales Coast Bowling League and they open the new season on 6 April at Craig y Don.
