Church concert

THERE will be an opportunity to hear an exceptional young organist at St Mary’s Church, on Friday.

Iestyn Evans was born near Cardigan and educated at Cardigan primary and secondary schools.

Whilst in the sixth form he was organ scholar at St David’s Cathedral and afterwards went up to The Queen’s College, Oxford, to read music.

After graduating, Iestyn was appointed organ scholar at Westminster Cathedral and the following year took up a similar appointment at Westminster Abbey while following a postgraduate performance course at the Royal Academy of Music.

He is now director of music at St James’s, Spanish Place, one of London’s foremost Catholic churches, and of St Botolph without Bishopsgate in the city.

Iestyn has worked at the Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School since 2001 and performs as soloist and accompanist in the UK and internationally, at venues which have included St John’s Smith Square; Notre-Dame de Paris; St Patrick’s, New York; Brussels Cathedral; Chartres Cathedral; Stephansdom, Vienna and St Peter’s, Rome.

Friday’s concert starts at 7.30pm – admission £5 at the door – and proceeds will be shared between Cardigan Cancer Care and St Mary’s Church.

Vocal music will be provided by two choirs – Haverfordwest Male Voice Choir and local choir Côr Merched Bro Nest. The choirs will perform individually and also as a united choir.
