HOW quickly they all learned that they didn’t know enough about recycling in Ceredigion!
Mererid Jones, waste communications officer for Ceredigion Council Waste Recycling Department opened a few eyes, during the U3As very informative March monthly meeting talk.
Mererid told them that there are no landfill sites left in Ceredigion. The landfill waste is transported to other counties close by, and that this is the less expensive option.
There are various actions to be considered, when thinking about disposing of anything. Prevent disposal by repairing and reusing, and fix to reuse. If it can’t be repaired, or reused, recycle, which allows, in some circumstances, reclamation in energy waste plants. As a last resort, it must go to landfill.
Here in Ceredigion plastics are recycled, according to the triangular symbol and number inside, from 1 through to 6, but in Pembrokeshire only 1, 2 and 5 are able to be recycled. It’s also acceptable to leave the lids on plastic bottles, when recycling. Bubble wrap is recyclable, but not wallpaper, or greaseproof paper, which is made from waxy plastic. Sticky tape can be left on boxes.
There are two types of vehicles in Ceredigion that collect recycling, depending on the location. These vehicles transfer our recycling waste to reprocessing plants, where it is sorted. Once sorted, off it goes to the baler.
The bales are transported for recycling and are sent abroad (mainly to Sweden) and to other UK destinations, depending on the price the council can get.
There were some things that should always be thrown away in black bags: Q-tips, crisp packets, tablet sleeves, nappies, wipes, rubber gloves and toothpaste tubes, to name a few of the most common.
This may have seemed a subject they thought they knew about, but Mererid’s talk proved them wrong.
During next month’s meeting, which includes the annual AGM, there will be a talk by Lt Col Kingston, senior director of music for the Armed Forces on ‘Music of the First World War’.
They are pleased to welcome new members to the Catholic Church Hall, North Road, at 2pm until 4pm on 27 April.
