U3A

THE Guildhall in Cardigan hosted Space For Everyone – an “all-star” event staged by the astronomy group from Cardigan and Newcastle Emlyn’s U3As attended by 70 enthusiasts from all over west Wales who enjoyed a “stimulating and inspiring” workshop. Pembroke member Graham Goodeve, an important U3A founder, was guest for the day.

David Grace, a member of the British Astronomical Society and a physics educationalist, started the day off with a lecture entitled How Light Tells Us Everything We Know About Stars, encouraging the entire assembled audience make (and take home) individual homemade Spectroscopes, for viewing the spectra emanating from various light sources, encouraging the entire assembled audience to make and take home individual homemade spectroscopes, for viewing the spectra emanating from various light sources.

Three members of the astronomy group gave 15-minute speeches, demonstrating just what goes on every month at their meetings. Leader and U3A group coordinator Adrian Milner boggled minds with a presentation on space telescopes, Samantha Walden-Jones asked some tricky questions with a talk in the form of a constellation quiz, and Martyn Edwards entertained everyone with his talk on iridium flare satellites.

Dr David Bacon, reader in cosmology from the University of Portsmouth, involved in the Dark Energy Survey, team co-ordinator for the Euclid Space Telescope and working member of the Square Kilometre Array Project, delivered a compelling lecture entitled Gravity in the Universe. The event was compèred by U3A vice-chair Helen Green.
