MP BEN Lake recently opened Cymdeithas Aberteifi Society’s first week-long projects exhibition in the Corn Exchange at Cardigan Guildhall.
Projects include early research for a 3D digital map on the history of Cardigan beginning in 1301; renewing interest in the part of the Pilgrims Way from Bardsey Island to St Davids which passes through the area from Mwnt to St Mary’s Church; the placing of seven traditional blue plaques on sites of lost historical interest: the old medieval town gates, the old market cross, the medieval Maudlins Hospice - a resting place for pilgrims now the Angel Hotel – and the first church in the town, Holy Trinity behind the Shire Hall.
Other projects are helping in the wording and sightings of new fingerposts and information boards; managing the new town app; help with obtaining funding for the Christmas lantern parade.
CAS will also be leading the Easter 2019 bicentenary events celebrating the bravery of the 60 local families who left Cardigan in the brig Albion to sail the Atlantic and start a new life in New Brunswick, Canada.
“This exhibition is the result of the hard work of the trustees and a group of U3A members who were responsible for the displays and we hope that it gives the community another opportunity to see and be proud of Cardigan and its importance in the history of Wales,” said a spokesperson.
“In the first decades of the 19th century, Cardigan was the busiest port in the whole of the Principality.”
• CAS meets in the 4CG office, Pwllhai, the last Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm.
