Royal Welch Fusiliers
A REPORT on the fun day at Capel Bangor golf facility was given. Only nine members and four guest golfers attended. Waiting for the golfers to finish meant that the range of darts, pool and a quiz did not take place. Therefore the day was a bit of a disappointment.
The hospitality afforded to us by Capt Colin Jones MBE and his wife Do was, however, excellent and a letter of thanks has been sent to them. Thanks was given to Gwyn, Eirian and Howard for arranging the day.
A report on the 100 Commemoration of The Battle of Mametz in July by Maj P-E – Over a 1,000 people attended this event in France. The 38 Welsh Div (Lloyd George’s Army), who were a poorly trained unit, were given the nigh impossible task of taking this large wood on the Somme across uphill, open ground, suffering nearly 5,000 dead in a five-day assault, including the above’s great uncle William Price Jones killed in action by a sniper.
The First Minister Carwyn Jones gave a good account of himself, amongst other dignitaries from Great Britain and France.
Thanks were given to our Standard Bearers for their great effort to honour the late S/Sgt Bob Hakes from Tywyn at his funeral.
The Branch Standard Holder was reported to have been strengthened to allow three standard’s weight to stand upright without support.
A branch letter heading had been designed and produced by Jen Taylor.
The next WWI Commemoration to France/Belgium (Passchendaele) was announced and planned for 29 July, 1 August 2017, at £175 for coach and accommodation, which is great value.
A Christmas lunch at Tyn y Cornel Hotel, Tywyn was agreed for Saturday, 17 December. Both Machynlleth and Tywyn RBLs to be invited. Welfare, finance and membership were covered.
Bruce Mckay donated his WWII original issue clasp knife to the RWF Museum, saying it had been a life saver to open tins with.
A celebration of the 1759, 1 August, The Battle of Minden was proposed. The 23 RWF being one of six Regiments who repulsed a French Cavalry attack (a first in history). The only Regiment to have the Midnen Rose worn at the base of the RWF cap badge.
The next meeting is Thursday, 6 October.
Pantomime
NOW is your chance to entertain your family, friends, neighbours and Dolgellau.
In preparation for next year’s pantomime we are having a meeting in the Theatr Fach on Sunday, 25 September, at 3pm for anyone who would like to be part of this local entertainment.
Organisers need a variety of skills, ages and supporters to get the show ready for next January. So if you would like to have a go at acting, singing, dancing, or helping back stage we would love to see you. Further details from 01341 422125.
