Mawddach Rotary Club

THE aroma of ginger permeated throughout the Free Library last Saturday on the occasion of Mawddach Rotary Club’s annual Gingerbread and Santa day.

In the under 16s class the winning entry was a joint one with Kiera Thomas and Keeley Ward proving that too many cooks don’t always spoil the broth, Well done to both of them.

In the adult classes there were some very interesting entries. The winner, judged by Dylan Rowlands, was Eliz Swain who was deemed to have produced the nearest to a traditional Gingerbread house.

However, in these days of “Grand designs” there are more non traditional entries.

These included a Dolgellau shop front, a castle and even a wigwam.

The castle, pictured above, was the runner up and was produced by Claire, Ben and Danny who introduced themselves as a Scotsman, an Irishman and an Aussi.

The three of them had only learned of the event last week after seeing it mentioned in the Sybrydion.

This just shows that it doesn’t take too long to conceive, bake and decorate a Gingerbread Grand design.

Many of the visiting public were intrigued by the detail within (and around) the castle which had stained glass window, drawbridge, portcullis and a moat with fishing boat, and fishing nets.

Inside there was also a treasure chest and the great hall had Christmas decorations.

In addition to the official winners, the visiting public also had a vote, the peoples choice, and this went to Sue Barnes who had modelled her creation on her own shop in Eldon Square (Dipsey Dragon).

On this entry comments were mainly about the “true to life” sprinkling of snow on the roof, window ledges and surrounds.

Whilst these culinary delights were on show upstairs, Santa was welcoming young guests in his grotto downstairs finding out what the children really want and parents could escape the miserable conditions outside with a hot cup of tea or coffee with a choice of many scrumptious cakes.

The Rotary club would like to thank all those who supported the event and look forward to even more entries next year.
