Gardening club

IN November, Roger Spencer from Trefhedyn Garden Centre in Newcastle Emlyn kept the group well entertained by talking about the plants and jobs we should be looking at now to in preparation for the arrival of spring.

His stories and knowledge were much appreciated by all who attended the meeting.

There is a slight change to the usual meeting dates for December so as not to clash with the Victorian evening in Newcastle Emlyn.

Therefore, the club will meet at 7.30pm in the Red Dragon Hall on Wednesday, 29 November, for a Christmas buffet and quiz.

There will be a competition for the best homemade decoration for a Christmas tree. This can be in any medium.

Then on Tuesday, 12 December, members will gather for a Christmas dinner at Newcastle Emlyn Rugby Club.

Club meetings are usually held on the first Wednesday of each month.

Free refreshments are served following the speaker’s presentation and club members bring along items for the raffle, such as spare plants and garden produce.

There is a warm welcome for everyone and guests are invited for free on their first visit. Annual membership costs just £10.

In addition, the club holds two plant sales every year; the first during May and the second sale is held at the Drefach Felindre Carnival.

Donations of plants, gardening items and garden produce are much appreciated for these events and proceeds go towards community projects in Drefach Felindre such as the annual Horticultural and Craft Show, which is held each year in September.

The club also arranges visits to award-winning and historic gardens, members’ gardens and specialist nurseries throughout the year.

They also have a dye bed project, linked with Ysgol Penboyr and the National Wool Museum in the village.
