THE latest community news from Harlech

Historical society

THERE is a change to the advertised programme of the society for May. Brian Paul, who was scheduled to speak about Samuel Holland, is unable to do so because of an accident.

In his place, Neil Evans, chair of Harlech Historical Society, will speak on ‘Senghenydd, 1913: Britain’s Worst Mining Disaster’. The terrible explosion on 14th October 1913 claimed 440 lives. While it happened in south Wales it was at a time when many people from north Wales in general and around Harlech in particular had travelled to south Wales in search of work and there were strong links between the areas which will be discussed.

The lecture will be illustrated with photographs and comments by observers. Archive footage of the funerals can be watched online at: https://player.bfi.org. uk/free/film/watch-senghenydd-disastermilitaryfuneral-of-victims-23rd-nov1913-1913-online He taught at Coleg Harlech for many years and is now an honorary research fellow in history at Bangor University and has published widely on modern Welsh history. He was brought up in Senghenydd.

The meeting will be held in the memorial hall at 7.30pm on Tuesday, 14 May.

Light refreshments will be provided.
