THE latest community news from Harlech
Historical Society
DUE to circumstances entirely beyond his control Neil Evans, the society’s speaker for May, was unable to attend the meeting. His place was taken by community archaeologist Andrew Wolfe who spoke on the subject of Neolithic Art and Astronomy.
Andrew started off with the spiral stone that is presently located in St Peter’s Church in Llanbedr (above) and was probably incised around 3000BC. The talk went on to consider how we might interpret stones of this type and others including the Bryn Celli Ddu pattern stone and those found at Barclodiad y Gawress on Anglesey.
The audience viewed a variety of this ‘megalithic art’ from Orkney, Brittany and Ireland. There are numerous interpretations of these somewhat mysterious symbols and designs but the most plausible, the speaker argued, is that they relate to the movements of the sun and the moon. The lively question and answer session that followed clearly demonstrated the audience’s willingness to engage in depth with this somewhat unusual but fascinating topic. The talk concludes the indoor meetings for this season. The new season begins in September. Between now and then there are three outdoor meetings, details available soon.
