Historical society

THE society’s February talk will be given by Sheila Cole.

Some years ago Sheila came across a copy of Thomas Pennant’s book, A Tour in Wales, in a bookshop in Bala.

Fascinated by the description of his journey through Merioneth in the late 18th century she decided to walk in his footsteps.

Thomas Pennant (1726-1798) was a landowner from Flintshire who travelled extensively through Britain and wrote enduring accounts of his journeys, recording antiquities, the particular histories of areas he travelled though and natural history along the way.

This account covers Pennant’s tour between Corwen and Barmouth.

Sheila followed his route, sought out the things Pennant saw and the places he went.

The talk is entitled ‘Thomas Pennant’s Tour of Merioneth 1781: Caer Drewyn to Barmouth’. It will be held at 7.30pm at the Memorial Hall, Twtil on 11 February, and is open to all.

Non-members £2 at the door.

Tea, coffee and biscuits to follow.
