THE latest community news from Harlech
Historical Society
THE society begins its new season of indoor meetings at 7.30pm on Tuesday, 12 September, at the Memorial Hall, with a talk by Richard Suggett on ‘Medieval Wall Paintings in Welsh Churches’.
Most of the churches we see today have rather plain and bare walls.
But in the middles ages they were adorned with bright paintings of scenes from the Bible.
They were intended to spread the message to a largely illiterate population.
With the protestant reformation of the Tudor period most of these were painted over and lost and emphasis shifted from telling rough pictures to reading the Bible.
In some cases wall paintings have survived.
The lecture will examine surviving examples to reveal a surprising and colourful aspect of life in earlier centuries.
Richard Suggett is a principal investigator with the Royal Commission on Ancient and Historic Monuments in Wales.
He studied social anthropology at the Universities of Durham and Aberystwyth before turning to the study of ancient buildings.
He is the author of many books on the domestic architecture of Wales and a frequent broadcaster.
As always, all are welcome to attend the talk and refreshments will be served at the end of the discussion.
Immediately following this will be the annual general meeting of the society to which prospective new members are cordially invited.
Classical Music Concert
THE final free classical music concert of the summer in St Tanwg’s Church, High Street, on Saturday, 9 September, starting at 7.30pm, will be performed by a trio, comprising violin, cello and piano/organ.
The performers include Gordon Gange, who is a professional musician, having been a violinist with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and is a church organist in Glossop.
Their programme includes music by Mozard, Corelli and Pachelbel and more.
There will be a retiring collection and refreshments will be available.
