Bridge Club

THEY had their usual enjoyable evening at Hafan Deg on Tuesday.

After 24 boards, it was very close indeed at the top but the winners were 1 Martin Davies and Gwenda Davies 57 per cent; 2 Keith Bellamy and Dai Hayes 56 per cent and 3 Andrew Phillips and John Evans 55 per cent.

During the evening this very interesting hand came up, neither side vulnerable.

North (dealer),

Spades 10, 9, 6, 4

Hearts A, 10, 8, 7, 6, 5

Diamonds 6, 3

Clubs Q

West East

H. Q H. void

D. K, 9 D. J, 10, 8, 7, 4, 2

South

H. K, J, 9, 4, 3, 2,

D. A, Q, 5

C. A, K, J

North opens a weak 2H, E/W compete in spades, South obviously goes at least to game (10 tricks) but it’s problematical where the optimum contract is. AS the cards lie 6H is cold for N/S. 6 spades appears to be a good sacrifice for E/W. But on good defence they lose control, being down to 5 trumps after first lead and having to establish diamonds, resulting in an impossible situation. How would you bid the N/S and E/W cards? At the club two pairs finished in 6H doubled and the other pairs in 5H + 1.

They meet every Tuesday at 6.45pm.

Visitors and learners welcome.

Dewch i’n gweld, croeso mawr pob tro.

They start at 6.45pm.
