Bridge club

AFTER a splendid evening of bridge on Tuesday, Martin and Gwenda were the winners with a remarkable 77 per cent.

Top of the leader board were: 1, Martin and Gwenda, 77; 2, John and Dai, 65; 3, Gill and Annie, 55.

Here’s a hand for you to attempt: Spades – K, Q, J, 10, 5, 4. Hearts – none. Diamonds – K, Q, J, 4. Clubs – A, Q, 3.

Your left-hand opponent opens 3 hearts, partner bids 4 diamonds, right-hand opponent bids 4 hearts.

Now it’s up to you. For his bid partner must have a minimum 5 card holding, likely 6 or more.

Now it all depends on aces, with 2 you have grand slam in diamonds, 1 makes a small slam certain, assuming the ace of hearts is with your opponents – they have 10+ cards in the suit after all.

You must ask for aces with Blackwood and then bid accordingly. At the club nobody bid the grand although partner had 2 aces.

The group meets every Tuesday at 7.45pm at Hafan Deg retirement home.

Newcomers, learners and visitors are always most welcome. Lessons can be arranged.
