Cymdeithas Hanes Llambed

THE October meeting took place on Lampeter’s Trinity Saint David campus and featured a talk by Gwyneth Davies of the National Library of Wales about the Great War Tribunal appeal records of Cardiganshire.

These records are unique in Wales with Cardiganshire being the only area for which they have survived.

In all other areas of the country the documentation of their respective tribunals has been destroyed following an official direction to do this.

This directive was obviously ignored in Cardiganshire, as it was in one county in England and another in Scotland.

The National Library in Aberystwyth was donated the papers and now has on its website these newly digitalised documents.

This collection has been transcribed by volunteers.

Initially, during the Great War, soldiers were volunteers, but later conscription was introduced as there was a shortage of military personnel. Gwyneth Davies said that an examination of these surviving records had helped to show how the appeal system dealt with people from this geographical area, and allowed an interpretation on how, for example, non-conformity or the Welsh language was dealt with.

The records also shed a lot of light on family circumstances and the local economy.

Conscription started in January 1916 and an appeal system was set up for England, Wales and Scotland.

This system dealt with appeals against being “called up”.

There was a tripartite system: local; then that covering county or county borough area (Cardiganshire); then a central tribunal in London.

Appeals were made by men affected by a decision of the military that they should join the armed forces, or by the military contesting a decision by a tribunal.

The speaker showed the audience examples of actual documents which men submitted for consideration of their case.

Amongst the audience there was much fascination with the original material shown, especially that relating to the Lampeter area.

The November meeting of the society will continue with a First World War theme with a talk about Welsh war songs.

Ramblers

ON Saturday, 20 September, Ramblers enjoyed a lovely eight-mile walk led by Alan Jacob on his home ground in the community of Pencarreg.

From the village, they followed the footpath to the old village school towards Rhydowen farm over Allt y Felin where there are wonderful views towards Lampeter and the Teifi and Dulas valleys.

The route continued eastward to the edge of Mynydd Pencarreg passing Llwyn-cuan ruins, the birthplace in 1830 of Evan Jones, the vicar embroiled in the saga of Sarah Jacob the Fasting Girl of Llanfihangel-ar–arth.

Reaching the mountain road we continued on to Blaencarreg taking footpaths leading through Llwyn-crwn woodlands and St Patrick’s Church.

Here they visited poet Daniel Evans’ grave (Daniel Ddu o Geredigion).

Then it was over to the shores of Llyn Pencarreg and the walk was completed with a cup of tea and a slice of Kristina’s delicious fruit cake.

They enjoyed a perfect autumnal day for our final stretch of the Spirit of the Miners trail from Pontrhydfendigaid to Borth on 6 October.

It was decided to start from Tre-Taliesin to pick up the trail at Talybont by zig-zagging through woodlands paths to the ruined farmstead of Cefn-erglodd which gave us splendid views over the Dyfi Estuary to the Tarren Hills.

Other walks undertaken by the group have included a short leisurely stroll in Tregaron and a lovely seven-mile walk near Pumsaint.

A few of the group joined with Llanelli Ramblers for a weekend of walks continuing on the Two Moors Way crossing over Dartmoor.

The new winter/spring walking programme is now out; details from James 01570 480743.
