Ramblers

THE group’s annual G?yl Dewi Sant walk was extra special this year as Lily, aged 8, and Morgan, 6, two Llanddewi Brefi primary school pupils, joined them for a four mile-ramble around Tregaron.

Led by Alan and Emlyn, the group followed on the Llanddewi Brefi road to Deri Garon and the footpath to meet the Cistercian Way at Dildre.

This long-distance walking route links up the Cistercian abbeys of Wales along ancient tracks and pilgrim roads and travels through Tregaron to Strata Florida.

Returning to Tregaron by Ystrad Caron they enjoyed a delicious bowl of traditional cawl at Y Talbot to finish off the walk.

Everybody enjoyed the ramble including the children who walked exceptionally well. The group hopes to see them again in future.

On Sunday, 24 February, they walked in the Brechfa forest from Rhydcymerau.

Led by Melfyn, who was born and raised in the area, they followed the course of old bridleways and byways through the forestry, downstream of the River Gorlech.

Passing Pwllcymbyd, Trawscoed and Banc farm, Melfyn relayed his memories as a young boy growing up in the forestry at Trawscoed, making the walk all the more stimulating.

He mentioned that, in oral history, there was a mill on the banks of the Gorlech, near the bridleway crossing, where curiously to this day the area is called Allt Felin-fach (wooded hillside of the small mill).

Other good walks the group has enjoyed this year have been on the banks of the Aeron from Talsarn, led by Medi, and a village walk at Pencader, led by Ann and Gwyneth.

Recently cleared footpaths and footbridges in the village have opened up new routes for people to enjoy a variety of rambling options in the area – an important and essential contribution to well-being and good health.

A warm welcome awaits all those who would like to join the group on their rambles. This month they will be out and about in Talybont, Aberystwyth and Tregaron, with an amble ramble in the vicinity of Aberystywth town for those who prefer shorter, easier walking.
