A FIELD day was arranged at Strata Florida graveyard in mid June in the company of Quentin Drew, lecturer at the archaeology department of the University of Trinity St David, Lampeter.

The graveyard coincides with the date of the abbey, so there are centuries of history there.

The shape of the enclosed area was discussed and the alterations in grave styles and headstones were brought to the attention of the members, together with the inscriptions and details on them.

Due to the inclement weather, the day had to be cut short, but it was altogether a worthwhile experience, if only for the members being taught to look at things, rather than just see them.

On 22 June, about 30 members went on a visit to Llanelly House; a building that has been there for over three centuries and undergone many alterations in that time.

However, the Carmarthenshire Heritage Restoration Trust undertook the project of getting the house back to its former appearance and achieved that at a cost of £7m.

The two guides gave the history of the house as members ambled around, pointing out some peculiarities.

How often do we say ‘If only these walls could talk?’ – well, they did just that at Llanelly House thanks to some modern-day technology.

Even Sir Thomas Picton made an appearance through the able acting of one the volunteers; a commendable performance.

On the homeward journey, a visit was made to Cydweli Castle, with members enjoying the fine afternoon weather. Thanks were given to Gaenor, Barbara and Phillip for arranging a most enjoyable day.

GOING along with the policy of changing exhibits from time to time, the museum now looks forward to welcoming Lampeter WI members who are bringing in their centenary display.

Visitors to the museum may remember that the Ceredigion Federation put together a large display last year commemorating the foundation of the WI in Wales in 1915.

It is a source of great pride that Lampeter founded their branch the following year.

On Saturday, 23 July, Lampeter Food Fair will again take place and the museum is holding a mapped treasure hunt. Do stop and take a chance at finding some treasure while supporting the museum.

Ramblers

LIVING in Ceredigion we are fortunate to have a wide choice of walk locations which include coast, woodlands, moors and mountains, green pastures and quiet country lanes.

Medi’s 11-mile walk from Bont Llanina, near New Quay, on Saturday, 2 July, was a perfect mix as members followed the coast path south as far as Afon Soden before turning inland following up its narrow wooded cwm to Cross Inn.

Crossing fields to Penrhiwgaled, they headed back by dropping down to Gilfachreda through the wooded valley and quiet lanes along the Afon Gido.

During the month of July, members are aiming to walk at least 30 miles to celebrate 30 years of Lampeter Ramblers with many members aiming for a multiple of 30 miles so Medi’s walk got them off to a good start.

On 16 July they will be completing their celebratory long-distance trail, the Mary Jones Walk, to Bala.

The walk is open to non-members, who are especially welcomed to come and join us.

The second part of the walk goes from Brithdir to Llanuwchllyn where a coach will take them to Bala and a visit to the Mary Jones Centre.
