Ramblers

LLANGAIN lies on the west bank of the River Tywi from where our nine-mile walk on 10 September started through the Castell Moel woodlands, on up to an old droving lane to Dolaumeinion farm, so called because of the two standing stones, Merlin’s Quoits, marks a Neolithic Burial Chamber.

Along the way we passed Fernhill, where Dylan Thomas stayed as a child and where once the assistant executioner of Carmarthen Jail lived before arriving at Llangain Church, returning through Old Castle farm.

On a very wet 3 September a few stalwarts embarked on the 10-mile section of St Illtyd’s Way between Pontardawe to Resolfen, through the three river valleys of the Tawe, Dulas and Nedd.

The long distance route will be completed next springtime, hopefully in amiable weather conditions!

Our 10-mile walk in Rhandirmwyn on 27 August was undertaken on a dry day, when starting from St Barnabus Church we followed footpaths to the disused metal mines of Nantymwyn.

The workings lie in the narrow stream valley of Nant Bai in stark contrast to the open foothills of the Cambrian Mountains rising above.

Our route followed ancient road systems over the open moorland to Dofallt and to the banks of the River Tywi to return to the church.

Footpaths around the Llangeitho area, with the help of Ceredigion Ramblers volunteers, in the last couple of years have been cleared and waymarked and made accessible by the County Council.

Walking in the enchanting Aeron valley is always pleasant and is much enhanced by the improvements made.

On 20 August, we followed a route from the centre of the village up to Llanbadarn Odwyn Church.

The views over the Aeron Valley from here are spectacular and a peaceful place to sit and enjoy a rest and some refreshment.

There are several routes and ways to choose from here and we headed to Deri-odwyn and Deri-garon to Penlôn and on to Llangeitho following the bridlepaths and footpaths back to the village.
