Ramblers
WE had a good start to our walks in 2017 by enjoying a fine day at Pumsaint with a ramble around the Dolaucothi Estate.
Starting from the village hall, we followed the footpath up through Allt Dolaucothi and on to the trig point at 283m above sea level. The views from this vantage point are superb and were featured this week on Weatherman Watching, a great promotion for the quiet and overlooked location this side of the popular Brecon Beacons.
Our walk proceeded through the forestry plantation to descend steeply to Aber Mangoed and the Cothi Valley where we returned via Dolaucothi farm, a distance of just over six miles.
Over the festive period we join the nationwide Ramblers Festival of Winter Walks and, to honour our Welsh historic traditions, we celebrate Y Gwyliau which was an extended festival in the olden days around mid-winter and Christmas.
There were many ancient pagan and Christian practices and ceremonies associated with this including Plygain, Mari Lwyd and Calennig amongst many others.
Our series of Y Gwyliau walks commenced with a Santa Stroll on 10 December, between Llandysul and Capel Dewi with the most delicious mince pies freshly baked by Eleri with warm spiced punch to finish. We all agreed it was the most splendid finish to a Christmas walk that ever could be.
Then to walk off our Christmas dinners on 27 December, we embarked on our Rugby Ramble with members from the Rugby Club up to Allt Goch and back on the Llanfair road past Llwyn farm. Having negotiated the muddiest field imaginable above Bwlchgwynt the cawl that awaited us at the Club House was most welcomed and deserved!
Details of walks are on the Ramblers website or contact James Williams (01570 480743).
