Ramblers

THE first leg of the Spirit of the Miners long distance route (Pontrhydfendigaid to Borth) has been rescheduled for 2 September, changing Saturday’s walk to a circular around the Pontrhydygroes area.

Led by James Williams, commenced an 11-mile ramble from Hafod Church over to Llantrisant Church via Banc y Bont.

The remote church, dedicated to Sant Afran, Ieuan and Sannan, is assessable only by foot and is cared for by the Friends of Friendless Churches charity and welcomes walkers to abide their time within in its small enclosed churchyard, a perfect and peaceful place to stop awhile and take a lunch stop.

From here, made their way to Pen-y-bontpren and followed the bridleway through Tynllidiart down to the Ystwyth at Pontrhydygroes and back up river to our starting point.

On Saturday, 22 July, Caroline Davies led her first walk very successfully at Cilycwm. Starting from the village, they crossed over on a footpath to the ruin of Efail Fach, birthplace of Morgan Rhys, a famous hymnist and teacher during the Methodist revival in the 18th Century. Efail Fach was last occupied in the 1950’s and when the last family left part of the exterior wall fell down due to the dresser being moved, the solid piece of furniture having held the wall up!

From here, climbed steadily up Rhiw-Mallaen to the flank of Mynydd Mallaen and a rest overlooking the Gwenlais ravine.

From here, the route eased as they descended to Glangwenlais following footpaths over to Soar Chapel.

The chapel is said to have been built around 1740 and has a plaque reading ‘this house was built Anno Domini 1740’ on the wall and is located on the lane leading to the river bridge near Penlan.

Nearing the River Towy we headed down the bridleway to Abergwenlais back to the start.

Details of walks are available from James Williams (01570 480743/041).
