Ramblers
SITTING in the Brecon Beacons National Park, Pen y Fan stands at 2,907ft, offering spectacular views of the beautiful Welsh countryside as far as the Clea Hills to the north. A popular destination for walkers, there are a number of routes to reach its summit.
Saturday, 7 October, provided the group with a mainly clear day for what is considered to be the hardest climb to the summit via an eight-mile route, which was led by James Williams.
Their nine-mile walk on Saturday, 14 October, in the Gorsgoch area, led by Lynden, is an area in Ceredigion worthy of walking discovery.
Literally meaning ‘red bog’, the village is skirted by the notable Rhos Glyn-yr-Helyg nature reserve.
Leaving the village, the group followed the unclassified road to Hafod-yr-wyn, which is located on the southern end of the River Granell to Blaenau-Gwennog.
Place names provide the clues as to the history and geology of an area and with the Granell being a parish boundary it is described that this ancient farmstead is situated at the uplands of the Llanwenog parish.
Lynden, a retired teacher, had as usual researched her walk well having chatted with farmers and landowners along the way and we learned that until recent times the original dwelling survived here for over five hundred years.
Having negotiated a very muddy wet section across fields the minor road reached near the old school provided a short respite before following the footpath leading up along a secreted narrow valley of the Clettwr towards Pisgah.
Here, they abandoned the definitive footpath due to blockages heading towards Moyddin Fawr at the foot Castell Moyddin hillfort – best not visited in May when legendary fairies in green dresses are to be seen!.
Following the bridleway through Fronfelen, Llechwedd Dderi and Clun-du, the Ramblers returned to the village having enjoyed a good local walk with wonderful views, history and legend.
